Staked: Who's dying on Vampire Diaries?

When the main characters on a TV show are in danger, it's safe to assume they're not actually going to die, right? Wrong — at least when it comes to the teen drama The Vampire Diaries.

US fans of the fledgling series were left reeling after the most recent episode — set to air in Australia on November 9 — which features the death of someone who had been set up as one of the main characters.

Series creator Kevin Williamson explained that he killed off the character to jolt audiences.

"I don't want [The Vampire Diaries] to be that show where there's no jeopardy," he told MTV. "[Some shows] are all very predictable in the sense that, well, 'We know this is the lead character so we know he won't die.' Or, 'That's a regular, so he won't die, it'll be a supporting person'.

"I want the show to have an unpredictable quality to it," he continued. "The audience will realise I will kill... the main characters. This is a show that will go there."

Williamson previously created Dawson's Creek, which infamously killed off notable characters including Abby Morgan (Monica Keena) and Dawson's dad Mitch (John Wesley Shipp).
