Picture gallery: the voices behind Transformers 2

It's a startling experience to hear the voice of a 30-metre-tall transforming robot from outer space emerging from the mouth of a regular-size man — but that's exactly what happened to TVFIX when we jetted to LA to meet the cast of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

No, not Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox. The real stars of the movie are the robots and the men who provide their voices.

British actor Mark Ryan had a unique role among the voice cast: not only did he voice Autobots Jetfire and Bumblebee, but he also spent time on the set interacting with the cast while they shot their scenes, so the actors didn't have to talk to empty air when they spoke to the robots.

Surprisingly, Ryan reveals that the final voices you hear in Transformers 2 were recorded just weeks before the film's premiere in June 2009.

"I finished doing my dialogue for [Jetfire] about four weeks before the film was actually released," he says. "It was pretty tight!"

Prolific voice actors Charles Adler (Starscream) and Jess Harnell (Ironhide) also have roles in the Transformers films, revealing that director Michael Bay and his crew gave them some particularly unusual instructions to get the robots' voices just right.

"I had to go in [to the recording booth and] scream and yell and do some wild things," Adler says. "And there had to be an alien language, and [the crew] gave me this scripts and I had to read all the words backwards. That's how we made it sound alien."

Voice actors are usually overlooked by moviegoers, but their hard work might finally pay off in Transformers 3. "In the next one Ironhide hooks up with Megan Fox," quips Harnell. "Hot!"

See what the actors behind the Transformers robots — and other cartoon favourites — really look like in TVFIX's gallery of animation superstars!

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is available on DVD and Blu-ray from November 5.
