US Kath & Kim earns full season

It's already been stripped from Australian airwaves, but the American remake of Kath & Kim will remain on US televisions for a while yet: broadcaster NBC has ordered a full season of the sitcom.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC has ordered an additional nine episodes of Kath & Kim on top of the 13 that have already been produced.

"Kath & Kim is a show we love and believe in," said NBC Entertainment executive vice-president Teri Weinberg. "We have incredible confidence in the creative auspices of this show, and we believe it's a perfect fit with our Thursday-night comedies."

Starring Molly Shannon and Selma Blair in the roles made famous by Jane Turner and Gina Riley in the Australian original, the US Kath & Kim has had mixed success: while the premiere episode drew 7.5 million viewers, 5.4 tuned in for the most recent instalment.

Some pundits have suggested that US networks may be reluctant to axe their series in the face of the economic crisis. The remake of Knight Rider and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles also won a full-season pick-ups, despite flagging ratings.
