The singer, who was a member of the briefly popular '90s boy band Five, admitted he was "gutted" by the rejection.
The show's format challenges contestants to prove themselves purely on their singing talents with celebrity coaches listening in on the auditions with their backs turned.
Coaches Tom Jones, will.i.am, Danny O'Donoghue and Jessie J all gave Sean the thumbs down, but after the audition Jessie recognised him right away.
"The problem is, as a coach, I don’t know what I’d do with you," she told the experienced pop star, who just happened to be one of her idols as a teen.
Jessie later told Bang Showbiz, "I was so excited about Sean from Five auditioning but I couldn't believe I didn't turn around for him. He was the first concert I ever went to.
"The way I react when I realise it's him will be the moment people realise I am still very much in a dream world and pinching myself that I'm here."
