According to the Los Angeles Times, principals of schools that have adopted new healthy menus are reporting "massive waste, with unopened milk cartons and uneaten entrees being thrown away". Some schools are even reporting burgeoning junk-food black markets trading in burgers, chips and chocolate.
The healthy line-up, which was influenced by Jamie, includes vegetarian curries and tamales, quinoa salads and pad Thai noodles — dubbed "nasty, rotty stuff" by one student, who said she preferred Cheetos and soda for lunch.
But another student said it was the "nasty" presentation of the healthy menu items that turned him off, not the food itself. He described food that was soggy, burned and hard.
