Retro Underbelly: Squizzy begins filming in Melbourne this week

Filming has commenced on an all-new series of Underbelly.

Razor fans will be delighted to hear the series will travel back in time once more. Set between 1915 and 1927, Underbelly: Squizzy chronicles the rise of ambitious gangster Joseph Theodore Leslie "Squizzy" Taylor, who featured in the 2011 series.

"Nine is thrilled to bring the romantic and audacious life of Squizzy Taylor to the screen. As our first celebrity gangster, Squizzy Taylor captivated, charmed and scandalised the Australian public of 1915-27," the Nine Network said in a statement.

Jared Daperis will star as the ambitious titular gangster, taking over from Justin Rosniak, who originated the role in Razor. Susie Porter, Fletcher Humphrys, Diana Glenn, Peter Moon and Dan Wyllie also star.

Underbelly: Squizzy is slated to air in 2013.
