'It got out of control': Behind Josh Brookes' X Factor disqualification

An X Factor fan who was featured in the controversial Twitcam session that got Josh Brookes booted from the show has declared his disqualification "unfair".

Josh and eliminated contestant Adil Memon hosted an unauthorised video chat with fans earlier this week.

It is alleged that Josh and Adil, 20 and 18 respectively, asked fans to upload "banana pics", widely understood to mean naked images.

Hailey, 16, is just one of the hundreds of fans left disappointed after last night's news that Josh had been disqualified for "inappropriate social media behaviour" following the chat.

"I don't think it's fair, they're just teenagers," Hailey said. "They were making people laugh."

Josh, who was eating a banana during the live chat, encouraged fans to send in their own banana pics. Hailey, not perceiving the request to be of a sexual nature, then uploaded a pic of herself with a banana, cucumber and carrot hanging out of her mouth.

"It was nothing dirty," Hailey said. "I told them to show my photo and they did. They showed it because it was the funniest."

It wasn’t long before the boys shut the conversation down because it "started getting out of control".

"They told us to stop sending photos because it was getting dirty," Hailey said. "I think someone may have sent something worse."

After reviewing the incident, the program's producers FremantleMedia Australia and the Seven Network made a joint decision to disqualify Josh from the competition.

"During an out of hours social media session Josh behaved in an inappropriate manner that put him in breach of his responsibilities to this program," read their statement.

"After a careful review of the incident, [we] made a joint decision to remove him from the competition. Josh will return home to Perth."

Last night, Josh expressed his regret in a public message on Facebook, saying, "People make mistakes, but sadly sometimes you must learn the hard way."
