The former Big Brother host was slammed by viewers and the media after her apparent lacklustre performance at the awards show. And it turns out she's not as thick-skinned as she seems.
"It made me question those who were hurling the slings and arrows, some of whom were people that I had shared my footpath of life with. They might be television commentators or other performers ... it was so hard and so difficult and so isolating," Gretel told ABC's One Plus One.
"I can think of no other way of describing it: it killed me. It absolutely killed that person who had existed up until then."
Despite having hosted eight seasons of Big Brother, Gretel admitted she's a "hopeless celebrity" who will never adjust to fame.
Asked about the new series of Big Brother, now hosted by Sonia Kruger, she said she's unimpressed by the recently-resurrected format.
"I think there is a certain level of TV exec that actually thinks the audience is mindless," Gretel said. "I think there is a lack of respect for our population as a whole."
