With Underbelly: Badness coming to screens later this year, plans are already under way for the following season of the true crime saga, to air in 2013.

The as-yet-untitled sixth Underbelly outing will be set in 1920s Melbourne and tell the story of violent criminal "Squizzy" Taylor, TV Tonight reports.

Taylor, renowned for his short figure (156cm), led a bloody gang war against a rival criminal group. He ran the gamut of dodgy dealings, with a string of offences including bootlegging, robbery, murder, assault, illegal bookmaking, illegal two-up schools, extortion and prostitution.

The notorious gangster made a brief appearance in the last series, Underbelly: Razor, played by Justin Rosniak (pictured, above left). His character was was killed in a 1927 gunfight with John Daniel "Snowy" Cutmore (Matt Boesenberg).

"Squizzy", real name Joseph Leslie Theodore Taylor, was previously portrayed by Homicide actor David Atkins in a 1982 film called Squizzy Taylor, with Jacki Weaver as his wife Dolly.

Filming is set to begin in the coming months. Before that, Underbelly: Badness will dramatise the New South Wales police department's pursuit of Sydney underworld figure Anthony "Badness" Perish (played by The Slap's Jonathan LaPaglia) between 2001 and 2011.
